Photo: Training Day 5

Day 5 was the final training day of the first year of the trial, introducing ‘Seeing it Differently’, the first Year 8 number module.

We watched video of an experienced RME teacher and her class coming to grips with reverse percentage and discussed how to develop classroom cultures which enable students to think aloud and help each other. See here for more on ‘sociomathematical norms’.

‘Seeing it Differently’ focuses on how we visualise numbers and multiplication – how many different ways can you count an array of dots, and how do you ‘see’ 3 x 8?

This module also introduces a new model – the ratio table – and illustrates its power in comparison with the bar.  Read about some research on the ratio table here.
