Teachers are central in bringing mathematisation and discussion together in RME classrooms. On our ‘mathematising‘ and ‘fostering discussion’ pages we highlighted key techniques for getting started. On this page we bring the mathematics and the pedagogy together, with a detailed look at these and a number of other teacher techniques.
As Marisa and Georgina discuss in the videos on our RME in action page, teaching RME is often about making choices. Sometimes those choices might be a question of deciding how far to pursue a technique – encourage more students to come to the board, or draw a line and move on; other times you will need to choose what technique will best support students’ thinking – going back to the context, or trying ‘some other students said…’
